Default Executing Saddam - good or bad?

Looks like this sub-forum needs a new topic...

My view - I don't agree with capital punishment whatever the crime, just let him rot in prison.

Realistically tho, the Shites and Kurds want blood so it'll probably happen. I think they should stage a fake rescue attempt in which Saddam gets gunned down. Sunnis/Baathists are happy he died resisting and not hung, everybody else slightly disappointed but at least he's gone. Would have been much better if they had just tossed a grenade in the hole where they found him and claimed he was firing his pistol at them, would have saved the drawn out trial nonsense.

Cuis: the argument many "omg capital punishment is BAD!!11" people will throw at you is that it is cheaper to feed them prison food than to execute them. And statistically speaking, it is.

If I recall correctly, it was to be broadcast on TV in Iraq...I don't know if they did for sure or not, though.

how can it be cheaper to feed a guys for 20 years then injecting or hanging or shooting them? Is it all the appeals crap death row inmates do as last resort?

well from the looks of the video they showed on TV, doesnt seem like they spent much on that rope that they tied around his neck, or the platform he was standing on.

Actually I think you'll find that argument is a long way down the list if even on it at all.

The state of Illinois reinstated the death penalty in 1977. From then until 1990 when it was suspended, the state executed 12 men and had 13 men's convictions overturned.
Quote:
Illinois Governor George Ryan declared a moratorium on executions, saying that his state has a "shameful record of convicting innocent people and putting them on death row."
This country has a long history of executing poor, minority, or mentally challenged men who were innocent.

Back on topic, I'm not saying Saddam was innocent but what do you really gain from putting him to death?

Was the world better served by sparing his life? Probably not. Is it a better place now that he's gone, probably not.....Pandora's box, here we come!

We should have let him rot in his cell, I think it was a bad idea to kill him.

I often wonder what people think when they see news shows that tell of kurdish and iraqi citizens who's family members have gone missing while saddam was in power with no traces or information about them at all .
Every time I see that on t.v. I feel for them and I can't imagine the brutality behind such heinous acts of barbarism directed towards others on such a massive scale. Saddam was a piece of human excrement and deserved a worse fate than hanging for his transgressions against the kurds and his own people. He got off lucky by hanging , assholes like him don't ever regret what they do, they just find a way to reason it for some deluded kind of moral judgement on others.

the fact of the matter is that he was tried through the Iraqi court system, convicted through their system, had his appeal, and was denied. i guess you call that such as life. and to moniker, what do you say to all the americans that have died at the hands of the iraqi's.
