Default Happy New Year!

“If you are going to go through hell, keep going” - Winston Churchill

Hell would be a good way to describe what many people went through in 2009. From record unemployment to the financial market meltdown, no one person or country was immune to the crippling effects of the economic collapse.

Including myself.

As I wrote last years message to all of you, I was still reeling with the sudden and unexpected loss of my job after serving proudly with a company for 13 years. My dismissal however was not due to some reduction in force or trimming of payrolls like many companies do during these times, but because of a man who held a vendetta against me for knowing too much. Too much of the business operations and too much of his personal failures. I was a threat to a man whose ego was more important than the 120 or so employees that served underneath him.

I spent the next eight months searching for a job. Like the nearly 6 million other Americans, I struggled with the thought of how to make ends meet and what would happen to my family if employment didn’t come soon. Living in Michigan only added to the stress as 1 out of every 5 people is unemployed.

My losses however, pale in comparison to the losses felt by members of our community. This past year pain was even harder for people like Pope who lost his father; Jester who lost his niece and the agony felt by DaBone and Buckshot on the loss of Buckshot’s son.

Yes, 2009 my friends was hell to many.

Yet, we are reminded that if we just keep going, we will make it out of hell and onto better days. The painful memories of 2009 will slowly be erased by those special events that touch our lives such as the announcement of Dominic’s engagement; the birth of a child to 007, RChicken getting married and Purg & Elektra purchase of their first home together. These people all have reason to celebrate events of the past year and are looking forward to the future.

It is these events and so many more that will wash away the pains of the past and help guide us towards a better tomorrow. With each day, we are seeing our economy getting stronger and unemployment easing. We just need to keep going.

I closed out last years wish to you with a quote from FDR. This holds as true today as it did last year and so many years before. “We must set sail – sail, not lie at anchor, sail, not drift.”

I propose we set a course out of hell at full speed and not look back. Though we cannot forget the past, we need to always look towards the future. As John Lancaster Spalding wrote, "Each forward step we take we leave some phantom of ourselves behind."

Wishing all of you a happy and prosperous New Year!

Butterpants: Perhaps you should consider a job in the journalism or something similar. You write very well. Eloquent, to say the least.

I just now read your encouraging words to bring in the new year Butterpants and am glad I have. Well spoken and uplifting!
Carl is right, look into anything that has to do with writing, for you have a gift. I will not hesitate to read next years.
